The Chilkat Challenge Triathlon is resuming July 2 after a three-year absence due to pandemic concerns.
The 36-mile race that includes paddling, cycling and running from Mosquito Lake to the top of Mount Riley and back down will be the fourth time the event has been held. It’s open to 100 registrants. In prior years, the majority of competitors have been from Haines, the Yukon and Juneau.
“We’re hoping folks want to come and join together,” said race steering-committee member Katie Craney. “It’s such a fun activity and to get together after a few years, especially with our regional neighbors.”
The race starts at Mosquito Lake where paddlers can use any non-motorized watercraft to paddle 8 miles to the 21 Mile takeout just south of Klukwan. Racers then cycle 22 miles to town where the 6-mile run route starts and ends at Fort Seward.
“It’s one of my favorite events,” said former competitor Sierra Jimenez. “It showcases the Chilkat Valley and all its best parts.”
Racers can enter as individuals or as teams. Prizes from local sponsors including Patagonia and Nugget Outfitters in Juneau and a myriad of local businesses will be awarded to athletes. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to a men’s and women’s division.
“It takes about forty-five volunteers to pull this off,” steering committee member Gershon Cohen said. “Support from the community is always amazing. For safety, we have people on the river to make sure there is someone in line of sight. Someone’s recording every person who goes by.”
