Royal Henderson and April Flaggman were married Saturday, March 25 at Sitka Fine Arts Camp in Sitka. Nolan Woodard served as officiant. About 65 people, including April’s family and friends from New York and Washington, D.C., attended. April is a special education teacher for the Juneau school district originally from Westchester, N.Y. Royal works as research analyst for McKinley Research Group in Juneau. Nolan is the new owner of Alpenglow Pizza in Haines.
Kristen and Judy Brumfield spent their spring break in sunny Phoenix, Ariz. where they celebrated their 50th and 84th birthdays, respectively. They stayed in a vacation rental home with a pool, hot tub, and orange and grapefruit trees. They were joined by 10 friends who traveled from Iowa, Colorado, Arizona, and Alaska to share in the fun.
Dorothy Stecher, 94, died March 26 in Haines, surrounded by family. Dorothy operated Moosehorn Antiques on Main Street for 17 years. An obituary is planned for next week’s newspaper.
Debra Schnabel, Sharon Res-nick and Carol Tuynman attended a recent memorial for former resident Dr. Jerry Balanco in Nola, La. Jerry is survived by wife Jean Meaux. The Haines trio spent three days seeing the sights of the Crescent City, including riding trolleys, touring historic graveyards and touring Bourbon and Basin streets. Sharon and Debra traveled 100 miles west to spend time at 4 Mile Bayou. Culinary highlights included boudin sausage, jambalaya, gumbo, fish cakes and po’ boys.
Gil Hartman of Decatur, Ala., spent 12 days in Haines helping daughter Marnie Hartman with house projects. They enjoyed skiing at 25 Mile and driving through the pass to Haines Junction to visit Jonny and Leslie Cromwell who recently welcomed their second child into the world on Feb. 28, Florence Cromwell.
Kirby Faverty was back in Haines this week, visiting mom Patricia Faverty and relaxing during a college break after playing in last weekend’s Gold Medal Basketball Tournament. Kirby is a sophomore studying computer science at Portland State University. He plays intramural hoops at college.
Registration for Haines Community Little League is set for 11 a.m Saturday, April 8 at the school cafeteria. T-Ball, major and senior leagues are open for boys and girls ages 4 to 16. Cost is $50 per player and birth certificates are required for new T-ball players. Parents, volunteers, coaches and umpires are asked to attend.
“Alaska Bear Attacks,” featuring the dramatized accounts of Caroline Van Hemert, Bart Pieciul and other Haines residents, are featured in three Apple podcasts, part of “Against All Odds,” a series of survival tales available online. Unlike newscasts, the podcasts use voice actors to tell stories.
Julia Billings, husband Adam Billings and children Maren and Oliver spent Spring Break in Surprise, Ariz., visiting Julia’s parents, Chuck and Kathryn Cohen. Trip highlights include hiking in the White Tank Mountains, seeing the Phoenix aquarium and zoo, and watching a Cactus League pre-season baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres.
Brook Cinocco was in town last weekend, visiting friends and family and checking on her upper valley property. Brook works in Juneau as an education coordinator for Sea-laska Corp.

Melina Shields and Tim Hockin have returned from a recent stay in Costa Rica. Highlights included daily surfing, and meals like ceviche made with marlin and fresh limes, and patacones, a dish of twice-fried plantains. Their yard there includes plantains, limes, mangos and limons, a cross between a mandarin orange and a lime. They visited Elena Horner, husband Victor St. Clair and the couple’s newborn daughter, Eva St. Clair, in nearby Santa Teresa.
You don’t have to cook much this weekend if you’re interested in supporting the Haines School. The fourth-grade class is hosting a fundraiser noodle-bowl dinner 5 p.m. in the school cafeteria Friday. It benefits the annual class trip around the Golden Circle. At the same time and place but on Saturday evening, Team Jenae will host a barbecued pork bowl and veggie dinner to benefit the planned playground in memory of former kindergarten teacher Jenae Larson.
If you missed them, the best, award-winning performances of the year by Haines School Debate, Drama and Forensics team will be reprised during a free showcase event 7 p.m. Friday at the Chilkat Center. A dessert auction fundraiser will be held in conjunction with the free show.
