I am not convinced that the assembly’s acceptance of Tyler Huling’s resignation from the Assembly on Feb. 14 was in the best interest of the community.

In her letter of February 6, assembly member Huling described why she no longer wanted to serve, and the Chilkat Valley News expanded on and validated some of her reasons in subsequent articles that featured past disgruntled assembly members. Perhaps a discussion exploring those issues would result in greater participation, better governance, and assembly performance.

In my opinion, the community is best served by retaining and considering the perspectives of those who feel underserved by the local government. We are in challenging times, when more varied and diverse voices must be heard and empowered; to silence opposition only prolongs our stagnation.

HBC 2.10.240(C) states that the Assembly shall declare an elective office…vacant when the person elected : C. Resigns and the resignation is accepted. There is no requirement that a resignation be accepted. Admittedly, a person cannot be forced to serve, but the possibility of creating a more inclusive and supportive culture should be explored by assembly members.

I believe that our community needs and wants the voice of Tyler Huling and others of her persuasion to serve on the Assembly. Huling was elected by large majority of citizens that respect her. The Assembly ought to have considered that.

Sincerely,

Debra Schnabel
