Former resident and tattoo artist Steve “Stevie G.” Geanoulis has died. Geanoulis worked for Erin McGinnis when they opened a Pair-A-Dice Tattoo shop on Main Street in Haines in the spring of 1998. The store moved a few years later to downtown Juneau, then to Anchorage in 2014, and most recently to Wasilla. Geanoulis owned the store since 2013.

The wedding proposal banner hung from the railing of Port Chilkoot Dock early last week worked. Childhood friends Wayne Clayton and Lisa Goodemote were married on Feb. 22, two days after Lisa spied Wayne’s message – “Lisa, would you marry me?” – while walking on their favorite beach. Mike Howard performed the nuptials at Tlingit Park. Wayne, who works as a carpenter, arrived here seven years ago after a friend sent him a plane ticket. Lisa came for a visit last summer and stayed. She works for a social service agency. Wayne and Lisa knew each other growing up in Barstow, Calif.

Former Haines Borough Mayor and career school teacher Stephanie Scott died Feb. 23 in Port Townsend, Wash. She was 75. Longtime friend Beth McCready said Stephanie died peacefully surrounded by children, Reed Scott-SchwalbachJoshua Scott, and Heron Scott-Schwalbach. Scott had been in Port Townsend since October, receiving hospice care. Many friends from Haines visited her there, McCready said. An obituary is planned.

Haines High School’s art club netted just under $4,000 during its Potters Dinner Saturday at the Old Field Kitchen. The event, where students helped chef Travis Kukell make homemade pasta and learned about presentation and serving at the dinner, sold out 50 tickets. Dinner guests kept their ceramic dinner plates crafted by students. Money raised will help pay for the club’s trip to a pottery camp near Salem, Ore. during the school’s spring break.

Patrick Cowart’s beef tri-tip chili won the People’s Choice Award during Saturday’s chili cook-off at the annual Winter Games at the Southeast Alaska State Fair. Debra Schnabel’s beef chuck chili was runner-up. Six crocks were entered and were subsequently gobbled up by folks participating in sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, and other contests. Dave ThomasNick Schlosstein, and Cliff and Giselle Miller made it to Whitehorse, Y.T. to take in films shown during the 21st annual Available Light Film Festival, Feb. 9-19. The festival included 50 feature films, 60 screenings, live concerts and a video crawl. Giselle said trip highlights included backcountry skiing and some cross-country skiing on the trails at Chadburn Lake Recreation Area.

Linda Huber said advice from neighbor Nigel Duffy helped her survive a four-hour ordeal that started when she was charged and kicked by a cow moose last weekend at her home on Four Winds Road near Mosquito Lake. Huber said the moose charged her when she went to let out her puppy Rottweiler Tahoe. She eventually chased off the moose with a four-wheeler but spent half the night in the woods searching for Tahoe, who’d gotten spooked during the moose run-in. Huber said snowshoes and battery-heated gloves made the difference after getting disoriented in the forest where she found Tahoe.

Eldred Rock Lighthouse Preservation Association was the recipient of CVCF’s $250 People’s Choice Award at the Haines High School basketball games on February 17. Fifty-five individuals nominated a nonprofit of their choice for this grant award, and Teresa Visscher’s nomination of ERLPA was drawn as the winning ticket.

Susie Eash of Los Alamos, N.M. also grandmom of baby Eira Brighid Iacocca Humphrey, whose birth was reported in last week’s column. Also, Buckwheat Ski Classic Nordic race lengths this year will be 16K and 32K, not 25K and 50K, as reported last week. Duly noted with apologies.
