Quinn Asquith-Heinz is a commercial pilot for Ute Airways, delivering freight to about a dozen outlying communities around Bethel since December. He’s flying a Cessna 172 and expects to move up to a larger Cessna 207 this year. He lives in Bethel and in Fairbanks. Quinn holds a bachelor’s degree in music with a minor in aviation from UAF.
Mae Clayton Haines died Dec. 11, 2022 at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. She was 60. A celebration of life is scheduled for July 1 at the Haines ANB Hall. The family is planning to publish a full obituary at a later date.
Girls on the Run, a program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident through the sport of running, is seeking more Haines coaches for the upcoming season. No running experience is necessary. Contact Liz Segars for more information, 907-314-3002.
Marshall McLane Marty was born to Greta Roberts and Max Marty at 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 30 at Bartlett Regional Hospital. Marshall weighed 7.5 lbs. and measured 20 inches. He is the couple’s first child. Greta’s parents Henry and Essie Roberts of Whitefish, Mont. made their first visit to Haines to see their new grandchild. Their Haines adventure included playing trivia at the Pioneer Bar last weekend.
Alfred “Al” Gordon, a 13-year resident of Haines, died at his Deishu Drive home Jan. 17. He was 77 and had been suffering from pneumonia. A celebration of life is tentatively planned for May 7.
A slide show Friday at the American Legion Hall featured hundreds of images captured by photographer Gary Jacobson. Jacobson has been shooting nature photos for decades, including when he worked as a bus driver at Yellowstone National Park, where he kept a kept a camera on a holster. He said he’s likely to do another show of his wildlife and landscape photos in the coming months.
The American Legion Auxiliary is hosting Taco Tuesdays at the Legion Hall weekly from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sales benefit the group’s annual scholarship fund.
Luke Patrick Menke, 52, oldest son of Kathleen Menke of Haines, died Jan. 18 at age 52 at home in Parker, Colo. He was in hospice care after suffering liver hepatitis. He is survived by wife Erin Drysdale Menke, brother Jake Menke, and children Skyler and Murphy Menke. Luke operated Panther Physical Therapy in Littleton, Colo. During his only visit to Haines, he told Kathleen, “I get it, mom. I see why you live here.” Luke was preceded in death by father Patrick Menke of Carbondale, Colo. Kathleen traveled to Denver last week to be with family.
Sisters Naomi and Lydia Green and Rebekah Reams recently returned from a three-week trip to Italy and Croatia. Naomi had just finished a semester studying film at University Carlos III in Madrid, Spain. She spent Christmas with uncle Dave Green, wife Orsi Keri and twin cousins Peter and Vilmos in Sembach, Germany. The three sisters met up in Croatia. Naomi has returned to UAF, Rebekah to her job in Fairbanks and Lydia to Haines.
Fentanyl test strips are available for free in a bin outside the Haines Public Health Nurse office on the second floor of the Gateway Building on Main Street. The test is used to determine if substances such as pills, cocaine or heroin are laced with deadly fentanyl. According to the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, “there is a significant risk that illegal drugs have been mixed with fentanyl” to increase their potency.
The championship round of the Haines School Tournament of the Readers will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at the school library. The Bookstore gift certificates and cash prizes donated by ProHNS will go to top teams in the reading comprehension contest. The event is open to the public.
