There is no “Community Dock” vs “Industrial Dock” that Haines residents need to “converse” about. The Haines freight dock is old, failing and in need of significant repair, and that is what the Haines Borough is pursuing. I called the group responsible for the advertisement, and they said the “Industrial” moniker is due to the designed increased weight bearing capacity. This is false. From the most recent design presentation slides from Turnagain Marine, the option chosen will provide “serviceability limited to existing fuel and cargo barges”.
Don’t be misled by misinformation about the improvements to our Lutak Dock. It is in very bad shape and needs your support for improvements that will allow freight to come to our town and for those that ship farther north up along the Haines Highway. Transshipment of goods is a very important part of our economy, please show your support.
