Residents gather outside of the Charles Anway Cabin during the Chilkat Valley Historical Society’s Homestead Day on Sunday, Aug. 21. Participants toured the cabin, competed in a cherry pit spitting contest and ate strawberry shortcake. The historical society is working to restore the cabin that was built in 1903 by Anway, known as the “Johnny Appleseed of Alaska” for his orchards, produce and strawberries.
