Max James Lampkins was born at 4:38 a.m. Sunday at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital to parents Jae and Jim Lampkins. Max weighed 7 lbs, 14 oz, and measured 21 inches long. Grandmothers are Krista Lampkins and Judith McDermaid. The couple is very grateful to Jae’s sister Mercedes Hansen and husband Kevin, who put them up for more than a month while they waited for the baby. On Monday afternoon, Jim was packing up the car in preparation for the drive back to Haines. “We are very anxious to get home,” he said.
A group of Haines residents attended “The Woodshed,” the Yukon Acoustic Music Workshop, near Whitehorse, Y.T., June 23-27. Ellen Larson, Marian Carlson, Julie Rae and Sandy Barclay studied ukulele; Mark Battaion, mandolin; Syd Moffatt, bass; and Johnny White, vocals. Attendees received hours of instruction. Groups had individual instruction and got lots of one-on-one attention. “You could always hear music. Someone was always playing something,” Larson said. The workshop ended with performances that combined instruments.
Incoming eighth-graders Steven Galinski and Eli Williamson competed in the National History Day contest in Washington, D.C., June 12-16. The boys performed a skit about the East India Company. Eli’s grandparents Ray and Sandra Williamson of Jacksonville, Fla. and Steven’s mom, Rachelle Galinski chaperoned the trip. The pair received accolades from judges. While in D.C., they visited sites and traded pins with students from all over the country. Ray and Sandra, Eli’s aunt Wanda Williamson and family friend Julie Wright, also of Jacksonville, made the props and backdrops for the boys’ performance. After the contest, the group traveled to Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s plantation in Virginia. In Atlanta they visited the Georgia Aquarium and the Coca-Cola museum. Eli is in Florida visiting relatives for a few weeks.
