Fishermen, friends and neighbors are gearing up for the 14th annual Haines Fishermen’s Community Free Salmon Barbecue.
The complimentary dinner will feature grilled sockeye, salad, potato salad, hot black beans with corn and a dessert brownie. It will be served 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 17 at the fairgrounds’ Dalton City. A $5 donation will support the fair.
The barbecue was launched as a promotion for local seafood and was later combined with the Kluane-Chilkat International Bike Relay, when as many as 2,500 meals were served. COVID-19 canceled the event in 2020. It was revived last year.
Organizers this year expect about 600 people to show up, said fair executive director Kari Johnson.
Lemonade will be served with Friday’s picnic meal. Other beverages will be available for purchase.
This year’s Southeast State Fair is set for July 28-31.
