A great thing about Haines is a lot of people make a habit of picking up litter when on walks or just crossing a parking lot in town. Then springtime brings the community focus on cleaning up trash scattered by winter storms.
Thank you to all who pitched in for the Community Cleanup spearheaded by the Women’s Club in April! Now this week hikers and boaters hit the beaches for some Marine Debris Cleanups spearheaded by Haines Friends of Recycling. Hikers targeted Twin Coves and Battery Point on May 4-5. Next Monday, May 9 we’ll boat to the Katzehin Delta on the M/V Taz (now free!). This cleanup is sponsored by Ocean Conservancy and Haines Borough. Space is limited and we need folks to check in for weather-dependent changes or to participate with your private boat. Please call Molly or Cindy for information or to volunteer: 907-723-7182 or 766-3802. Boats will haul out trash from all locations.
Also, during May boaters can dispose of marine debris in a container at the new harbor launch ramp at no cost. Grab a yellow litter bag from the harbor office to take with you, but please, no household trash. Help protect our natural beauty and wildlife by snagging any plastic or trash that doesn’t belong on the beach or in the water.
Other event sponsors include the Borough Solid Waste Working Group, Community Waste Solutions, Chilkoot Indian Association, DNR Parks, and Takshanuk Watershed Council. Thank you for supporting a debris-free Haines!
Sincerely,
Molly Sturdevant
