The Haines High School’s concert band and choir received a total of five superior ratings at the Southeast Region V Music Festival held at Juneau-Douglas High School April 7-9.

Senior Logan Borcik qualified for two command performances, one for his piano performance of “Bethena” and one for his bass vocal solo, accompanied by Nancy Nash on the piano, of “The People that Walked in Darkness,” which received a standing ovation. A command performance is an unjudged repeat performance of an entry at the awards ceremony capping the tournament.

“I was kind of surprised about my command performances,” said Borcik. “It was definitely really fun again to go up on stage and perform and hear everyone cheer. It was a good experience and a good environment.”

Borcik said he had a lot of fun at the festival. “Music Fest as a whole was really fun,” said Borcik. “It was cool to have an actual in-person Music Fest again, and it was cool to see a lot of people I had seen my freshman year, and now they’re all seniors.”

Borcik has also qualified for the Alaska State Solo and Ensemble Contest from May 6-7.

Senior Natalie Jobbins received a superior rating for her vocal solo, accompanied by Nancy Nash on the piano, of “Danza Danza.” Jobbins will also attend the Solo and Ensemble contest in May.

Though disappointed her solo didn’t receive a command performance, Jobbins said she is very happy with how Music Fest played out. “This year’s Music Fest was, honestly, all that I could have asked for with it being my senior Music Fest,” said Jobbins. “I wish I would have gotten a command performance myself, but I am so proud of everything that everyone else did that I don’t even care that I didn’t get one.”

The Haines concert band received a superior ranking and standing ovation for their “Music from Frozen II” arrangement. The concert choir also received a superior ranking and standing ovation for their performance of “Can We Sing the Darkness to Light.”

The Haines Acappella Vocal Ensemble got superior ratings and four standing ovations, one for each of their four songs, “What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor,” “Silhouettes,” “And so it Goes,” and “The Longest Time.”

The Acappella Ensemble was formerly known as the Man Choir, but Jobbins joined the crew this year. “The group of people was great and being part of the ‘Man-ish Choir’ was really refreshing,” Jobbins said. “Seeing four standing ovations in a row was really, really humbling. It made me realize how much people enjoy watching.”

The Haines concert band and choir will be performing a spring concert at the Chilkat Center the last week of April.

Performances can be viewed on the Haines Glacier Bear Facebook page.
