A moose killed late last month by a FAA Road resident was shot in defense of life and property, Alaska Wildlife Trooper Colin Nemec told the CVN.
“The moose was shot after it had entered a dog run with a fence at least six feet high, and the owner had taken all reasonable measures to release the moose from the fenced enclosure,” Nemec said. “The complainant stated he shot the moose after it charged at him. The moose was completely salvaged and given to multiple charities in the local community.”
Nemec said between five to 10 people are injured by moose every year in Alaska.
“It’s always regrettable when an animal has to be dispatched, but this is the time of year when food sources for moose are most scarce,” Nemec said. “As such moose tend to be more ornery due to the lack of food.”
The cow was pregnant. A resident gave the amniotic sac and fetus to the Haines School and Chilkat Forest Investigators’ Mario Benassi dissected it with elementary students late last month.
