The month-long 2022 Tournament of the Readers finished this week with a nail-biting match between two fifth-grade teams. Congratulations to the Reading Girls (Patience Nelson, MacKenna Dryden, Chloe Lloyd, Emma Blilie), who took first place with a narrow win against the second-place Book Nerds (Spencer Baumgartner, Finn McMahan, Sophia Hedden, Chisel Triezenberg). The Sharp Readers (composed of third-graders Evan White, Mila Thomas, Kayci Ferrin, and Yarona Bochart-Jacobson) came in third place. I am very proud of all 13 teams who participated in the tournament this year. Students and staff really helped make the tournament happen, and I appreciated the flexibility of the Haines teachers who scheduled around class and other activities. This event couldn’t happen without the continued support of Karen Garcia and Holly Davis, who help judge each game and assist with writing questions for the books every year (there were 425 questions in 2022)! Karen’s employer proHNS donated prize money for the top three teams, which, in addition to gift certificates to the Bookstore, adds to the exhilaration of winning. Students look forward to this captivating event every year and I value the opportunity to continue the tradition.
