There have been many heroes in the last month as Haines got clobbered with more snow and wind.

Thank you to Nishan Weerasinghe for plowing around the Public Safety Building on Jan. 9 before anyone else could get to it.  Your actions were noticed and appreciated.

In another incident, the evening of Jan. 4, in the words of Harbormaster Bell – “The gangway, during low tide, came off the guide tracks at the bottom of the ramp, allowing the gangway to get wedged behind these steel tracks. Once this happened, the gangway got pinned in place and was unable to slide forward during the incoming tide. With the gangway stuck in place, something had to give. As the water rose, the supporting float began to sink and buckle under the pressure. This led to severe damage of the supporting gangway float and it was only getting worse with every tide cycle.”

Thanks to Ira Henry, Brent Crowe, Stuart DeWitt and Derek Poinsette, for their quick action and innovativeness, otherwise the gangway would have suffered more damage.  Your understanding of how bad the situation was and your willingness to engage quickly to get a temporary solution was remarkable.
