Seriously? “… what am I going to do for myself? What am I going to do for me to keep me safe?” This quote from the new Borough manager in a recent KHNS story makes me so sad and disappointed. We, the people of Haines, have always strived to take care of each other. We pull each other out of ditches, we shovel our neighbors’ roofs and plow their driveways, we shop for and deliver groceries to the more vulnerable folks in town, we raise money when one of us is in need to help with medical expenses. Haines went all out for my granddaughter, Willow, this fall. In addition to the much needed financial help, you all held us when we most needed it and our family is forever grateful. This is the Alaskan way, the Haines way. I hate to think about what it would have felt like if the “what am I going to do for myself” attitude had been the norm. We all remember how our amazing community came together for the good of all after the slide disaster last year. Let’s not let anybody change us, Haines. Let’s keep on doing what we have always done. We don’t have to agree on everything, we just need to keep being the kind and loving folks that we are.

Thank you Haines!

Sincerely,

Debi Knight Kennedy
