The State of Alaska’s Division of Parks operates more than 80 public use cabins statewide, including nine in Southeast Alaska.

Preston Kroes, superintendent of parks in Southeast, recently told me that he was open to the idea of establishing two Division of Parks cabins in Haines – the Chilkat State Park cabin and the cabin at 19 Mile Haines Highway – as public use cabins available for daily rental, although this would probably not be feasible until the winter of 2022-23.

Kroes said that emails of support from the public would be helpful in making this change happen. If you support this idea and would like to use a rental cabin like ones maintained by the state and federal governments all over Alaska, please email Preston at [email protected].

A short, simple message of support will suffice. Thank you.
