An anniversary memorializing the Dec. 2 flooding and landslides that killed two and displaced dozens last year will be held Saturday, Dec. 4 at 1.30 p.m. at the small boat harbor, the same location that last year’s candlelight vigil was held.

“It’s a time to remember and a time to also realize and celebrate how strong the community was during the disaster and afterward,” said Ann Myren, Chilkat Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) board member. “Recovery is a long process. A lot of people have come to the table to help work on that and help the community. It’s a recognition and a celebration of that and also a part of the long-term healing process.”

Jenae Larson, a teacher, and David Simmons, former director of the Haines Economic Development Corporation, were both killed after a landslide destroyed Simmons’ home on Beach Road.

The CVCF helped facilitate planning with the Haines Long Term Recovery Group and the Haines Borough.

Mayor Douglas Olerud said local pastor Matt Jones will speak and Dana Perreard will play music. Residents will then walk to Picture Point where the Mayor and a Salvation Army staff person will address the community.

“I hope this allows us to come together as a community and reflect on the last year,” Olerud said. “December was a traumatic event. We’ll reflect on the resiliency we showed getting through it and the compassion for our fellow community members and looking at how we move forward from that.”

Olerud said there will be fires to keep warm and food and drinks available at Picture Point. Transportation will be provided to residents from the boat harbor.

Olerud said plans for memorial benches for Larson and Simmons are being created by high school shop students. A table built by John Carlson will also be installed in the spring when another event will be held.
