Chatham School District superintendent Bruce Houck, 61, was found dead in his home Wednesday morning.

Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Tim Despain said a trooper traveled to Angoon Wednesday afternoon to conduct a death investigation and determined Houck died of natural causes in his sleep.

“His next of kin were located and notified,” Despain said. “No foul play is suspected and the State Medical Examiner’s Office released the body to his family.”

Houck made news recently as the administrator in charge of the Klukwan School. The Chatham school board, Houck and Klukwan School staff and residents have been in discussions about whether to close the school since Klukwan School’s enrollment fell below 10, the minimum number of students needed to maintain full state funding.

The school board planned an emergency meeting for Wednesday evening.
