Sawmill operators and logging truckers from the Haines area and state officials responsible for highway and logging safety enforcement came to an amicable meeting of the minds Sunday in a three-hour meeting at the magistrate’s courtroom.
After state officials had outlined clearly the regulations which apply to logging trucks in terms of speeds, weights, lengths, types of equipment and safety procedures, and the local mill operators and truck drivers had clearly outlined the particular needs of the logging industry in this area in terms of speeds, weights, lengths, types of equipment and safety procedures, it was agreed by all that logging in the Haines area is unique in the state – it is about the only area where public highways are used extensively for logging – and that special consideration might be obtainable in the form of a special permit from Cosby Steene, commissioner of highways.

A local fourth-grader’s entry in Alaska Airlines’ “Paint the Plane” contest won her family a free trip to Disneyland.
“I was like, screaming,” said nine-year-old Gabrielle Galinski about the Dec. 23 phone call that notified her she’d won first place amongst fourth-grade entries statewide.
Galinski said she entered the contest in hopes of winning the free trip. “I’ve never been to Disney.”
She said she’ll take mom Rachelle, father Tony, and five-year-old brother Steven to California in May.
The contest commemorated the 50th anniversary of Alaska statehood.
