The Haines Sheldon Museum’s Model train display is back this year. The train will be running throughout the main gallery and in and amongst the exhibits on Dec. 2. from 5-7 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and classic Sheldon Museum punch are available in between the parade and other festivities. The gallery will be displaying the Wayne Price art exhibit throughout the holidays. The museum will also host Pictures with Santa Claus and cookies and candy submissions on Dec. 10 from 1-3 p.m.
The Bookstore will feature musician Nate Miller and handmade vintage sea glass jewelry by Scavenging Siren.
Haines Brewing Company will display Kelly Mitchell’s mixed medium paintings.
The Port Chilkoot Distillery is featuring local artist Amelia Nash. Nash has been exploring mediums of collage and encaustic wax for decades. Her work is informed by a lifetime of collecting paper ephemera and a fascination with the female experience as filtered through the lens of printed media.
Holly Jolly Follies ‘rebranded’
The premier of “Tinsel & Tidings” will take place Saturday Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Directed by Sue Waterhouse, the performance will include a variety of Christmas themed skits and musical performances. Waterhouse said they decided to “rebrand” the traditional Holly Jolly Follies show. The musical 1950s-themed musical acts will include a surprise guest musical icon from the era.
“Retro these days is the latest trend so I thought, ‘let’s do something different,’” Waterhouse said. “ It’s going to be corny. There will be paper looped chains and popcorn chains and cranberry chains and lots of tinsel.”
Following the show there will be caroling in the lobby and treats available. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $7 for children and students.
In other arts events news, Lynn Canal Community Players is producing “A Commedia Christmas Carol,” based on the Charles Dickens classic. The cast includes four women and four men, performing as stock Commedia dell’arte characters. The show runs Dec. 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Dec. 24.
The classic character of Ebenezer Scrooge gets a comedic makeover in a “zany take on the classic Dickensian tale of redemption,” according to the script synopsis.
“On Christmas Eve, a Pantalone Scrooge receives a visit from his old friend Dottore Marley, launching a series of quirky visitors and unforeseen capers. Masks, acrobatics, and holiday cheer abound in this madcap physical romp.”
Teri Bastable-Podsiki will host glass fusion ornament making classes at her Glass Wings Studio on Dec. 10. The class provides all supplies necessary and there is no experience required. Check out Glass Wings’ Facebook page for more information.
The annual Lighting of the Fort will take place on Dec. 3 at 5 p.m., with the accompanying cannonball blast to kick off the celebration. The event will include weenies, a bonfire, a Nativity tableau and caroling.
The Haines School Winter Concerts are scheduled for Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. (grades 6-12) and Dec. 8 at 12:30 p.m (grades K-5) at the Chilkat Center.
The annual Haines Christmas Parade which will take place on Dec. 10 on Main Street at 3 p.m. under the lighted snowflakes provided by the Public Works Department.
