The U.S. will open the Canadian border for vaccinated foreign travelers in November, federal officials announced on Tuesday.

Officials didn’t set a specific date for the border opening.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has kept the land border closed for nonessential travel since March 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, even after Canada lifted travel restrictions on vaccinated Americans in August.

Douglas Olerud told the CVN in September that his store, Alaska Sport Shop, usually would get about 30% to 40% of its business from Canadian travelers. Alaska Rod’s owner Rod Hinson also told the CVN that in years past 30% of business has been from Canadians. The border closure “definitely is hurting us,” Hinson said at the time.

In early January, the U.S. will require all visitors crossing at land borders, even those traveling for essential purposes, to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
