BIG ENOUGH TO MOVE AWAY A MOUNTAIN — This giant culvert is one of four installed recently at the slide at 19 Mile Haines Highway. They will go under the reconstructed highway and are intended to be large enough to allow a piece of heavy equipment inside to flush out debris, when needed. The section of road at 19 Mile is among the most expensive sections of road in Alaska to maintain, due to frequent mudslides. For perspective, the ladder in the photo is six feet tall.
