When I first moved to Haines in 1987, the area we now call “Picture Point” was called “Garbage Point.” All kinds of garbage and appliances were dumped there in full sight of the town. Fortunately, this area has been cleaned up. Today, we can all be proud of the viewpoint with the totem poles, covered picnic tables, and public restroom facilities.
Last week, I was guiding on the Klehini River at 25-mile and came upon an abandoned refrigerator stuck on a log jam mid-river. At the put-in area we call “the Dike,” we found where someone had dumped their garbage and partially burned their old toasters, pots and pans, assorted plumbing fittings, and other junk. I’ve come upon old washing machines, dryers, and other appliances dumped at various spots all along the back roads there. The 25-mile area is used and enjoyed by boaters, RVers, snow machiners, four-wheelers, and skiers. Can we agree as a community that this area should not be “Garbage Point North?”
