On July 24 at Valley of the Eagles Golf Course a party was held to celebrate course owner Dr. Stan Jones. Bonnie Johnson and Toni Dewitt, with support from friends and Stan’s family, hosted a half-birthday party for Stan, who will turn 90 on Jan 7. He will be at his winter home in Arizona on his actual birthday, so Toni and Bonnie planned an early surprise party. Nearly 100 friends and family came to the potluck dinner and told stories about Stan. Many of those stories were regarding his years as a private doctor in Haines. The Lack Family Band sang some of his favorite songs. His son, Mark Jones, with wife Frankie, attended the party from their home in Washington. Another son, Craig Jones, with wife Beth, and one of their daughters, Anastasia, are in town for their annual summer visit and were also in attendance along with many additional local family members. Darlene Bolick joined the celebration and will mark her 90th birthday on Aug 6. Bob Lix was at the party, having just celebrated his 90th on July 3. Mary Price, a nurse who worked in Haines with Stan for decades, was present and celebrated her 90th birthday on July 28 when she held court on her porch at her residence on Deishu Drive while friends and family drove by, honking and cheering!
Tyler Swinton grew up in Haines playing golf at Valley of the Eagles Golf Course and later was a collegiate golfer at Oregon colleges: Southwestern and Oregon Tech. On July 18, he broke The Valley of the Eagles course record. He golfed a score of 29 from the white tees. He broke former golf pro Andrew Rex’s July 24, 2014 record of 30.
Tyler’s wife Lynzee Swinton’s mother, Angie Wortman, and her brother, Bryce Wortman, recently visited from their home in Eugene, Oregon. Highlights of their trip were fishing at Chilkoot, four-wheeling up to Flower Mountain, riverboat rides up the Chilkat, hiking Mount Riley and seeing the Lack Family Band perform. Bryce enjoyed golfing at the local course, too, as he recently graduated from San Jose State, where he was on the golf team.
