To whom it may concern,

And you know who you are. Just because something on a person’s property is visible from the road, it is not an invitation to take it. The timbers on our property had already been given to someone else before you took them. There was no sign saying “take it if you want it.” Otherwise, I could find some nice things in the yards of others too. Possibly pick their cherry trees or garden.

The December landslides and floods left many of us with a big job to clean up and sort out. There will be all manner of tools and materials lying about as we continue to restore order. We need these things to work with. Some have noticed us tearing down one of our buildings and came to ask if certain things were going to be disposed of. If they could use them—we were glad to be saved the disposal fees and let them have the item. Don’t take the word of a “friend of a friend” that “hey, they are letting people take things over there.” Come and ask us. We have reasons that things are stacked or piled where they are, and plans for some of it.

The people in Haines dealing with this major issue have heavy work loads and expenses to take care of. Don’t add to the load. This was disappointing.

Let the looters remain in New York and Portland etc.
