The Chilkat Valley Community Foundation hosted a donor appreciation barbeque gathering at the Park Stage at the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds on Friday, June 11.
Donors enjoyed burgers grilled by Connie Staska and Thom Ely. Melissa Ganey, Erica Loomis and Betsy Lyons served food, which included buns made by Josie Allen. Tom Heywood entertained donors with his guitar while attendees visited with each other in a group setting at the outdoor event. Board members Chuck Mitman, Anna Jurgeleit, Liz Heywood, and Carolyn Ganner were in attendance and greeting donors in their roles as event organizers. Fran Tuenge decorated the tables with flowers she picked locally and arranged.
Crystal Badgley was the emcee of the event and introduced speakers Heather Lende and Ann Myren along with Diane Kaplan, president and CEO of the Rasmuson Foundation. Kaplan spent the day in Haines visiting with nonprofit leaders, Haines Long Term Recovery Group representatives and CVCF board members and said that she became acutely aware of the ongoing impacts of the December weather event in Haines. She announced her intention to donate $25,000 out of her discretionary fund at Rasmuson Foundation to the CVCF Emergency Response Fund so that the local foundation can continue to help the community by providing recovery assistance and support to those in need.
Janine Allen on behalf of Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL), and Kay Clements for KHNS radio spoke as grant recipients for their non-profit organizations. Uriel Minor gave a heartfelt testimonial about his involvement with the youth work program, a collaboration between Takshanuk Watershed Council and SAIL. This event gathered more RSVPs from donors than any previous event CVCF has hosted. This suggests that the joyful givers of the community continue to appreciate the connection that CVCF facilitates amongst the people and organizations it serves.
