Grace Marie Pamela Comstock was born 12:19 p.m. Easter Sunday at the SEARHC Mount Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka to parents Gina and Korey Comstock. She weighed 6 lbs., 11 oz. and measured 19 inches. Grandparents include Amanda Randles, Sally Garton, and great-grandmother Pam Randles.
Kindi Gibson and Derek Davison were married Sunday at the Portage Cove Wayside lookout. About 20 guests attended the ceremony, which was officiated by Dean “Bear” Lari. Friend Courtney Hunt and fiancé Robert Butker were witnesses. Following an Easter egg hunt at Portage Cove campground, guests dined on egg salad sandwiches made with the hunt’s eggs. They also ate carrot cake with cream cheese frosting made by Hunt. Gibson works at Mountain Market and Davison works at Olerud’s and coaches track.
Versia Bieleski, a 60-year resident of Haines, died Saturday, April 19 at her Piedad Road home. She was 99. Services were held Tuesday at the Catholic Church. A full obituary will be printed in next week’s CVN.
The Haines Middle School Student Council’s Community Service Committee is collecting old eyeglasses, sunglasses, and cases. The group will send donations to the Juneau Lion’s Club for repair and donation to people in need. Drop boxes are at the school’s front office, Olerud’s, and the Senior Center. Eighth-grader and vice president of the middle school student council Seth Waldo has run the service committee for the past two years. Aide Suzanne Newton came up with the idea for the collection.
Johanna Lindsay Mixon was born 5:06 p.m. April 7 at the Alaska Family Health & Birth Center in Fairbanks to parents ChanaSue and Jared Mixon. She weighed 9 lb., 2 oz. Johanna joins big brother Vander, 21 months. Maternal grandparents Joel and Carilee Delano of Choctaw, Okla., attended the birth and traveled to Haines with ChanaSue and the children, who are back in town for the summer. Jared is still in Chefornak, where he teaches. He’ll join his family at the end of the school year. Paternal grandparents John and JoAnn Mixon of Atoka, Okla. plan to visit in July.
Eight Haines residents graduated from the recent EMT 1 class held at the Haines Fire Department. Borough fireman Al Badgley said that the number of locals in one graduating class is higher than usual. Jenn Walsh was the instructor.
Isobel Smith and parents Norm and Suzanne spent a week traveling across the country visiting Isobel’s top college choices. At Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., the family received a tour from freshman Patrick Henderson, a Haines High 2013 graduate. He woke up twin Royal, also a freshman at Gonzaga, to say, “Hi.” The family then headed east for Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Norm and Isobel had difficulty understanding the New England accent, and were left speechless when a waitress asked if they would like a garden salad. Suzanne, who attended school in Connecticut, helped interpret. The family also visited Isobel’s half-sister, former resident Janine Wilkinson, husband Ryan, and sons Owen, 3, and Alaric, 1, of Boston.
Megan and Marshal Burnham and daughters Zoey and Keziah enjoyed their first trip to Haines so much, they’re planning a return trip this summer. The family, from Carmacks, Y.T., took the advice of “everyone in the Yukon,” and headed to Haines for the long Easter weekend. They visited Chilkoot River and attended Easter service at Haines Presbyterian Church. Marshal is the author of “Raise Your Gloves,” a new book about his experience training with professional Ultimate Fighter Championship fighter Chad “The Disciple” Laprise.
