Senior Haley Boron set a new 100-meter school record at the Juneau track meet May 7-8. Boron ran a personal best of 13.27 seconds. The previous record was set in 2016 by Nattaphon Wangyot with a time of 13.36 seconds. Boron placed second in the finals.
“When I found out that I beat the board, I was ecstatic,” said Boron. “Every time I saw the 13.36 on the record board, I thought ‘I want to beat that.” Now that I’ve accomplished my goal, I’m really focused on breaking past 13 seconds.”
Senior Carson Crager had a personal best in the triple jump. Crager placed first at the meet with a jump of 38’6.25”. The second-place athlete jumped 35’9”. Crager is 7.25 inches away from breaking the school record.
Senior Lydia Andriesen set a personal record of 6:45.85 minutes in the 1,600 meters. Her time was 20.08 seconds faster than her previous personal best. It was also the first time she has ran a mile in less than seven minutes.
The Haines girls 4x200m relay placed first at the meet with a time of 2:00.71. Sitka placed second with a time of 2:05.88. The Glacier Bears were only 1.58 seconds away from the school record, and are ranked fifth in the state.
Thunder Mountain and Juneau-Douglas high schools hosted the meet. Juneau required officials and spectators to wear masks at all times. Athletes were mandated to wear masks during warm-ups, but not during competition.
Ketchikan’s track team was uninvited from the meet due to their rising number of COVID-19 cases. Ketchikan High School is currently closed and all activities have been cancelled.
Haines athletes will compete at home on Saturday, May 15. Thunder Mountain and Juneau-Douglas will arrive at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Field events will begin at 11:30 and running events will begin at 12:30. The teams will leave at 5:30 p.m.
The Haines track team plans to make their home meet a “pink meet” to raise cancer awareness and raise funds by selling popcorn and pastries.
Athletic director Lynzee Swinton said she expects about 60 total Juneau athletes to compete at the Haines meet. Petersburg may compete virtually, she said.
The Haines track meet is the last competition before regionals in Juneau on May 21-22. The top 16 times in the 1A/2A/3A division will attend state. The state meet will be held at Dimond High School in Anchorage May 28-29.
The school board has approved state travel for wrestling and track. Both meets will be held after the school year ends.
