Chuck Mitman was awarded the Commander of the Year Award by the Department of Alaska of The American Legion and Lynn Canal Post 12 was given the “Unity Award” for its service to the community during and after the Dec. 2 storms.
“The Unity Award is awarded to the Post, Unit, Squadron and Riders that have displayed outstanding cooperation and have been diligent in working together for the betterment of all veterans,” said department administrative assistant Kelly Petersen. “We saw that with what Haines went through last winter.”
Post 12 members nominated Mitman. In a letter to the state Legion office, Ralph Strong said Mitman’s dedication not only as a Legion member but as a volunteer fireman and EMT distinguished him during the pandemic and the natural disaster.
“Overseen by Commander Mitman, Post 12 became a collection site for homeless victims…(he) set up meal preparation and service with our fine auxiliary volunteers,” Strong wrote. “Many of our volunteers logged 18-hour days. Commander Mitman was one of them.”
Department of Alaska National Executive Committeeman Jim Pisa said the department annually awards posts and individuals across Alaska. “Chuck got chosen for his leadership and for everything he did during the natural disaster that you guys had down there,” Pisa said. “He did a great job doing what he did organizing and keeping everything going.”
Mitman said it feels nice to be recognized for the teamwork the Legion displayed.
“We’re just happy we got recognized for all working together as a team,” Mitman said. “It takes a team. There’s no superheroes.”
