Isabella Frost Cheney was born 5:03 a.m. March 7 at Juneau’s Bartlett Regional Hospital to parents Kathryn and Ted Cheney. She weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces and measured 19.75 inches. Big brother is Winter Cheney, 3. Kathryn said their new addition is quiet and simple. She hopes she will be crawling in time for the Southeast Alaska State Fair’s Diaper Derby, which Winter won in 2011.
Karen Garcia spent a week in Orlando, Fla., at Disney World with her parents Luis and Judy Garcia and sister Tara. They visited the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Islands of Adventure and Animal Kingdom, all the while riding rollercoasters, taking in shows, and watching spoiled children throw temper tantrums. Karen and Tara walked away from the trip with sunburns and several pounds of candy. Karen also ran into Sue Libenson at the Seattle airport, where the two enjoyed a glass of red wine.
Steven Cunningham’s mother Caroline Clara Cunningham was surrounded by family when she died March 10. Born to bakery owners in 1931 in Martinez, Calif., Caroline graduated from high school in 1949, and married EC Cunningham, who died in 2000. The couple raised four children in Oroville, Calif. Caroline is survived by sister Fredette Pardini of Martinez; children Susan Cunningham of Martinez; Steven and wife JoAnn of Haines; Stacey Hogarty and husband Jim of Sterling, Va .; and Sam Cunningham and wife Debbie of Sacramento.
Susan Schumacher returned from a 10-day trip to her hometown Penryn, Calif., where she arrived on schedule despite the tornado that took place near San Francisco. She visited parents Bob and Marlene Slover and brothers Bruce and Todd, and delivered local halibut.
It was an exciting trip to Juneau for 18-month-old Rye Gala, who hadn’t been to the Capital City since his birth in 2012. He went last weekend with parents Stacey and Scott, and sister Mandalyn. In addition to “mastering the toddler slide” at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center, the baby also placed a 911 call using the Best Western hotel room phone, Stacey said.
Over 30 quilters attended this year’s annual four-day Ripinsky Rippers quilting workshop, which took place at the Haines Senior Center during President’s Day weekend. About 10 quilters came from Juneau. Former resident Raine Litera, who now lives in Anchorage, was also in town for the event, which included food, contests, and prizes, quilter Becky Nash said. Nash said that quilters sew all day and into the night.
Jim and Deb Stanford have a house full of family this week. Visitors include daughter Jaime Stanford Bentley, husband Jeff, and children Taelyn, Jema, and Cyrus of Sitka, as well as son Coleman Stanford, Amber Long, and children Grace and Ariel of Juneau. Family activities planned include dog sledding with the Stanford dog sled team, skiing, and snowmachining.
Residents took advantage of the school spring break to hit the slopes at Juneau’s Eaglecrest ski resort last weekend. Eileen and Kerry McIver’s sightings included Alison, Libby, and Ketch Jacobson; Esther and Celia Bower; Darsie, Courtney, and Griffin Culbeck; Noble and Julie Anderson; and Ed, Kai, and Mori Hays.
Chad and Stacey Clark and children Payson and Sierra are enjoying a visit from Stacey’s sister Theresa Criger, children Haley and Seth, and mother Connie of Tucson, Ariz. Plans for the weeklong visit include skiing in the pass, hiking, fishing, and swimming at the pool. Theresa and Connie took an Alaska cruise nearly 20 years ago. The children are Alaska first-timers.
