Eight months after the firing of then-manager Debra Schnabel, the Haines Borough is advertising for a new, permanent manager.

On Tuesday, assembly members voted unanimously to approve an advertisement they refined over the course of several meetings in late December and early January, facilitated by consultant Lenise Henderson-Fontenot.

“We had three Personnel Committee meetings, four (Committee of the Whole meetings). I had a meeting with the Mayor, and the Mayor and I and the deputy Mayor had a meeting and talked with Ms. Henderson about the process,” Personnel Committee chair Paul Rogers said at Tuesday’s meeting.

Rogers said the meetings focused on making sure the advertisement’s language matched the manager’s job description. In December, Henderson-Fontenot drew the assembly’s attention to the disparity between the 2017 manager advertisement and the job description.

“The Borough Manager is the chief administrative officer of the borough reporting directly to the borough assembly. This person is responsible for the effective and efficient administration of all borough services,” the new advertisement reads. The advertisement lists a salary range of $110,000 to $140,000.

On Tuesday, assembly members also approved a hiring process outline with steps including an application screening by the Personnel Committee, assembly review of qualified applicants, short interviews with six to eight semi-finalists, longer interviews with a short list of three to four candidates, and a public meet and greet prior to hiring the new manager.

The advertisement will be posted in the CVN and on websites including the Alaska Job Center, Alaska Municipal League, Government Jobs and Indeed. The application deadline is Feb. 26.

Borough clerk Alekka Fullerton has been filling in as interim manager since Schnabel’s firing. On Wednesday, both Schnabel and Fullerton said they’re still deciding whether to apply for the permanent position.
