I want to thank Jeanette Heinrich for many years of service as our top local election official whose integrity is without question. She keeps our polls and workers organized and on time.
So I feel offended by those who do not trust our election system. Years ago I was asked to work the polls to maintain a bi-partisan balance amongst workers. Completing Alaska’s poll worker training, again, I don’t see how anyone could tamper with results, count a dead person, or vote twice. At the end of the day every signature, spoiled or questioned ballot, is accounted for. Official poll watchers from both parties observe polling places in every precinct nationally. State tallies have bi-partisan boards watching. The system is set up to be fair. Other nations look to us when setting up their own.
For democracy to work, we have to have trust in the election system. For all of Trump’s claims of voter fraud, he has shown the courts no proof. His followers are so enamored, however, they repeat his every lie. He makes a joke of our presidency, of America itself. Under Trump, we have listened and watched as our top leader behaves and talks in ways that are decidedly unpresidential, and downright dangerous to our democracy, sowing division and hatred of “other.” He is so impulsive and self-centered that we should ask ourselves, is this the person I want carrying around the nuclear football, able to make the decision to push the button, all by himself?
