State Rep. Henry Reeves (R., Haines) is back home recovering from the longest state legislative session in Alaska’s history.
“Haines will be affected by one bill passed during the final hours of the session,” Reeves said, referring to the compromise measure hammered out in free conference committee to refund to boroughs funds equal to 3.5 mills times the assessed valuation of the borough as a way to grant some relief to local taxpayers.
Since assessor Ken Gain has estimated about $7.2 million in real property value in the Haines Borough, 3.5 mills would raise $25,000—the amount which will be granted to the borough by the state.
Another part of the bill—which has yet to be signed by the governor—will provide funds for school districts with students whose parents work or live on state lands.

The Blue Fox, Thunder Cobra and Black Beauty will be at the starting line Sunday for the Great Haines Soap Box Derby race. About 45 youths are signed up for the competition set for 1 to 5 p.m.
Traffic will be diverted from Second Avenue during the single elimination contest, which will be held in two-car heats between Main Street and the Visitor Center.
Organizer Darrell Maple aid local interest and support for the derby has been impressive. About 30 sponsors have underwritten the cost of a dozen “community cars” and the number for entries overall is about double what was expected.
“This has kind of exploded on us,” Maple aid, adding that organizers initially were uncertain of having the required 10-car minimum to register as a sanctioned race.
Next year, Haines likely will become an affiliate of the Great American Soapbox Derby, qualifying the top local entry for national competition in Akron, Ohio.
