For 12 years I was on “morgue” duty. Granted the present situation for taking care of deceased is inadequate. But realistically in 12 years no one asked to see the remains. Once in those 12 years we had 3 deaths at once. With no mortician the job is not to prepare the body for viewing. We only do what is necessary for burial which must be done within 3 days. Also, many are choosing cremation as an alternative to a casket and burial. It seems that with talk of the need for a new building to house police and fire departments it should include a better morgue. Money was already spent on a refrigeration unit for COVID possibilities. We really don’t need another separate building to maintain. We have all been affected negatively by the economic impact of COVID. Spending $200,000 at this time on a morgue seems like an extravagance in light of more pressing needs in the community.
