Inspired by Lucy Harrell’s final act of giving to Haines institutions before she died last summer, which included more than $1 million to the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation, resident Sue Waterhouse is advocating for an annual “I Love Lucy (Harrell) Day.” The borough assembly will consider the proclamation at its July 28 regular meeting.

The proposed day honoring Harrell will be her birthday, Aug. 1. Waterhouse said she hopes the day of remembrance will “urge all citizens to observe this day in the future with activities and act of kindness that demonstrate and celebrate selfless giving.”

If the assembly approves the proclamation, Waterhouse and other organizers will stream a Facebook Live video where residents will submit personalized messages remembering Harrell’s impact. Those interested in submitting a message can contact Waterhouse at [email protected] or at 907-314-0099. The video will be streamed at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Harrell donated millions of dollars to local organizations throughout her lifetime in Haines. Harrell founded Haines Assisted Living and donated roughly 80% of the funding required to develop the building, along with the Soboleff McRae Veterans Village and Wellness Center.

In May, her trust gave $100,000 to the Haines Sheldon Museum, $200,000 to Haines Assisted Living and $25,000 to the American Bald Eagle Foundation.

“There isn’t one person in town who hasn’t benefited from her generosity,” Waterhouse said.

Harrell died Sept. 7, 2019. She was 95.
