The Alaska State Troopers drug unit Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs arrested a Haines resident on May 15 for misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree, a Class B felony, at the Juneau airport attempting to bring 43 grams of methamphetamine into Haines.
The meth was worth about $8,600 and was equivalent to about 172 doses, Trooper Scott Carson said.
Carson said his agency received a tip that the individual was traveling from Anchorage to Haines. Troopers approached the individual at the airport with a police dog that alerted officers to the presence of drugs.
“They had more than we felt was a user amount and we felt it was definitely for distribution,” Carson said. “We applied for some search warrants. When we searched their luggage that’s when we found methamphetamine.”
The woman admitted to carrying meth and said she was delivering it to another individual, according to court documents.
Carson said before the encounter with the suspect, the Troopers called the Haines Police department to get background information on the individual.
“Anytime I have a tip or a lead on something, I will generally reach out to that police department and say I heard this person may or may not be involved,” Carson said. “In small towns like Haines, everybody knows everybody there. I want to know what the police may or may not know about somebody.”
