In over 50 years of living in Haines and operating a garbage company for 17 years in Haines, I have never had a bear damage property or return to my property for food.
How is this possible? Bears do not return to a place where there is no food. By proper handling and disposal of bear attractants, I have never had a bear get into a building or garbage.
The Court records of the Haines Magistrate shows no citations for improper handling and/or storage of bear attractants have been issued by the Haines Police Department in 2019 or 2020 until Tuesday.
The Haines Police are not part of the solution. The Haines Police are the problem. By not enforcing State Statutes and Haines Borough Code the Haines Police allow residents to continue making bear attractants.
Please inform the Haines Police that they do not have the authority to decide which laws to enforce. Despite the huge amount of our tax dollars the Haines Police spend, they do not understand what their job is.
