The Haines Borough Assembly plans to discuss hire of a new borough manager at the end of this month.

At Tuesday’s assembly meeting, members added the topic as an agenda item for the June 23 personnel committee meeting.

Also Tuesday, assembly members approved a manager evaluation form and a timeline for conducting annual manager evaluations. Under the new timeline, every year on June 15 the Mayor will send manager evaluation forms to assembly members. Members will have until July 15 to complete their assessments.

Assembly members agreed that a mid-summer timeline would give newly elected members time to become acquainted with the manager before conducting the evaluation and would allow enough time on the tail end to adjust manager performance before fall elections.

Borough manager Debra Schnabel was fired May 19. Several community members expressed disappointment during public comment that the evaluation form and timeline received approval after Schnabel’s firing. Schnabel had not received a performance evaluation since fall 2018.

At the next personnel meeting, assembly members will consider evaluation forms for other borough officers including the clerk and chief fiscal officer.
