A Southeast Alaska State Fair structure was destroyed in a fire late Wednesday morning after the wind caused a brushfire to spread. Fair staff were clearing and burning brush behind Raven Arena to make space for a larger community garden, said fair executive director Kari Johnson, when the wind picked up and blew sparks into the red structure behind the arena that was once used as horse stalls. The building was ablaze within seconds said Adrian Revenaugh who was nearby when the fire started. Dozens of volunteer firefighters responded and extinguished the flames. Johnson said besides the structure and mats used for Fair activities, no other property was damaged. Fair staff had an approved burn permit for the fire.
