Lucy Madeline Bell was born to parents Sarah and Shawn Bell at 12:53 a.m. on Thursday, May 7, at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau. Lucy weighed seven pounds, 13 ounces, and measured 21 inches. Lucy’s grandparents are David and Noreen Altdorfer of Marion, Iowa, and Robert and Terri Bell of Chilkat Lake. Lucy’s siblings are Mary, 6, Anna, 5, Luke, 3, and Rebecca, 2.

Garland Bay Bishop was born to parents Sarah and Chorus Bishop at 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, Mother’s Day, at the Juneau Family Health and Birth Center. Garland weighed seven pounds, eight ounces. Her grandparents are Kerry and Gershon Cohen of Haines, and Susan Raczka and Han Bishop of San Francisco, Calif. Raczka traveled to Haines for the occasion.

Several former Haines students graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Sunday. Leigh and Greg Horner drove to Fairbanks to attend the university’s 93rd commencement ceremony and watch son Marley Horner graduate with a bachelor’s in theater performance. Marley’s sister Elena Horner also made a surprise trip from Seward to visit her brother. Steve and Maggie Daly also went to watch Fran Daly graduate with a bachelor’s in elementary education. John Venables Jr. graduated with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering, Vanessa Salmon with a bachelor’s in social work and Kimberley Strong with a bachelor’s in rural development. Former Haines High student and UAF student Quinn Asquith-Heinz played trombone in the band that performed “Pomp and Circumstance” at the graduation ceremony.

Haines fishermen Brad BadgerBlake Ward and Chris Olsen attended the Red Cross’s 16th Annual Real Heroes Breakfast in Anchorage, where they each received the Marine Rescue award for the Sept. 21 rescue of Woody Pahl from his sinking fishing boat. The award, sponsored by the Dowland-Bach Corporation, included a trophy and certificate. Brad’s wife Jessie Badger, Blake’s father Mike Ward and Chris’s father Dean Olsen attended the ceremony. Pahl also made a surprise appearance. During the trip, the Badgers drove down to visit Whittier and attended a Brad Paisley concert.

Joshua Scott and Reed Analita Scott-Schwalbach accompanied their mother, Stephanie Scott, to her 50th high school reunion last weekend. Stephanie, Joshua and Reed all attended Westtown School, a private Quaker school in West Chester, Pa. Stephanie said about 75 people attended out of the 96 graduates from the Class of 1965. “It was emotional and it was a great time,” Stephanie said. On her way to Pennsylvania, Stephanie stopped in Seattle and visited son Heron Scott.

The Great Alaska Craft Beer and Home Brew Festival is featured in the May edition of Alaska Airlines’ magazine, Alaska Beyond. Writer Lora Shinn interviewed Haines Brewing Company owner Paul Wheeler and Southeast Alaska State Fair director Jessica Edwards for the piece, “Tasty Celebrations: A Foodie’s Guide to Festivals Around the Country.” Wheeler talked about his Captain Cook Spruce Tip Ale, while Edwards spoke about the festival’s attraction of “passionate and eccentric” brewers. This year’s event is scheduled for May 22-23.

Carol Tuynman returned last week from a five-week trip through the eastern United States. In Asheville, N.C., Tuynman spent time with daughter Emily Fader, son-in-law Mike Gargiuolo and grandson Arthur Gargiuolo. She also visited the Biltmore Estate and toured its gardens, an experience she plans to use as inspiration for the Fort Seward Sculpture Garden project. In Manhattan, N.Y., Tuynman caught up with daughter Anna Fader, son-in-law Mike Eigerman and grandchildren Amelia and James Eigerman. Tuynman also attended an ArtPlace America summit in Philadelphia. The best part was hearing about creative-placemaking projects from all over the country, she said.

Joe Oesterling is looking for volunteers to help train his dog Hera for search-and-rescue certification. Hera is a 2-year-old German shepherd. Volunteering involves going in the woods and playing dead, and using a radio to communicate with Oesterling. Oesterling has been working with SEADOGS in Juneau to make Hera the first search-and-rescue certified dog in Haines. To volunteer, contact Oesterling at 303-0234 or [email protected].

Debra Schnabel traveled to New York City over the weekend for the wedding of Henry and Suzy Cordes of Brooklyn, N.Y. Schnabel walked through Central Park, hung out in Times Square, and spent time with cousin Omar Cordes.

Scott Hansen is the new assistant community manager at Haines Assisted Living. Hansen will learn parts of the community manager and executive director position held by Vince Hansen. Vince said Scott will train to back him up, including helping manage the Soboleff-McRae Veterans Village.
