Here are some ideas to consider during a global pandemic:

* Think “we” not “me.” We are in this together as a community. All decisions and directives should be based on what is best for the general health of our community. That is the bottom line. If you have some type of political agenda or libertarian manifest, shelf it until times are back to normal again.

* Wear a mask to the post office and the grocery store. Wearing a mask is a simple consideration for the staff who must interact with the general public in an enclosed building all day long. Masks may not keep you safe from infection but they are an easy way to help prevent infecting others. If you don’t have a medical mask, use a scarf or bandana. Make your shopping trips as sparse and efficient as possible.

* There is an overload of information about the pandemic; much of it is untrue or misleading. Consider gathering information from reliable independent sources: public radio, local/regional newspapers; public health websites from WHO, CDC. Spreading rumors from dubious sources destabilizes the community and exasperates fear and paranoia.

* Isolation, fear, and uncertainty over an extended period of time will tax the mental health of people, especially those who are living alone and/or have underlying health issues. This is a time to show compassion and support for those in need. Take time to contact someone who is living alone or struggling with this unprecedented sudden change in our daily lives. A simple phone call, e-mail or friendly wave can go a long way. Check in some way to make sure they are doing okay.
