Because of COVID-19, rules are getting stricter, rights are becoming fewer, and no one is speaking up. Have we all seen the real data ourselves? Do we know the real risks facing our economy? Do we actually know enough to make an informed decision about our own health? Do we still have that freedom? How long can the economy, on a local, state and country level, survive with the government paying out near 2 trillion dollars and no money circulating back through? What will happen to Haines with our businesses closed, most workers laid off, and no tourists coming to save us this summer? The shelter in place order will help flatten the curve, but it also lengthens it. Is the tradeoff worth it? Many Americans are already falling through the cracks. Unemployment offices are overwhelmed and crashing. The government forced massive layoffs, promising that people would be taken care of, but now can’t deliver. Why not shelter the elderly, those at high risk, and let the younger, healthier people go out and work? We already have a great system in place for people at high risk so they can stay safely home and still get the supplies they need. Let those with less risk build the herd immunity. Let us protect our communities from financial ruin. If you’ve had these thoughts please speak up. Contact your local borough, your state government, and remember that nothing will change unless you make yourself heard.
