Police Chief Don Yerrick was on a familiar call Monday morning – responding to a runaway pickup at the foot of Main Street.

At about 10:30 a.m. a 1975 GMC truck loaded with fishing gear moved from a parking spot near the bank and rolled downhill about 100 feet, smashing through a wood trash can on the Sheldon Museum lawn before lodging itself on the large rocks there.

“I was over in the laundry and heard a crash. It’s a damned good thing those rocks are there, or it would have gone right through the museum,” said Ora Swinford, a visitor from Daleville, Indiana.

A pond created by beavers broke through a dam last month, flooding a building and threatening other structures at the government housing at 38 Mile Haines Highway.

The flood narrowly missed four homes, but washed away some of the road down to the housing and flooded a garage.

“It threatened two of the four homes, but only one had water in the garage,” said Rich Tolles, who responded to the flooding, which lasted less than one hour. “It came and went.”
