The Haines Glacier Bears varsity volleyball team defeated Skagway on both days of last weekend’s home games.
“It was super nice that the community came out to support us,” said senior Dori Getchell of Friday night’s crowd who cheered the Bears on to victory. “That was really, really appreciated. It was fun to show Haines what we’re made of.”
The girls’ volleyball team held consistent leads throughout their matches against Skagway.
Sophomore Kiersten Long led the team with hits and senior Becca Wheeler led in aces.
The Glacier Bears JV team also competed during the weekend’s contests against Skagway’s varsity team. They lost both days, but won one match in a series on Saturday.
“Our JV team was almost all freshmen,” coach Katie Dickerson said. “They did really well against Skagway’s varsity. They kept those games really close. In years to come we should have a strong team because they were playing so strong as freshmen.”
The varsity team is led by five seniors and one junior: Miranda Haddock (junior), Megan Whitermore, Melanie Thomas, Raine Winge, Getchell and Wheeler.
“We had a lot of great communication,” Haddock said during Tuesday’s practice as they prepare for the north seeding tournament this weekend in Skagway. “There were hardly any errors and everyone was having so much fun. We really brought our all to those games.”
The team is practicing rotations, hit coverage and serve receives as it goes into the tournament where they’ll face Petersburg, Craig, Wrangell, Klawock, Metlakatla and Skagway.
They’ll again compete in a south seeding tournament on Nov. 8 – 9 before the regional tournament in Wrangell on Nov. 18 – 19.
