The pool will remain closed through October after the Indianapolis contractor RenoSys has again announced project delays, according to public facilities director Ed Coffland.

“The original contract (end) day was August 16. They didn’t’ meet that. They were asked to provide a schedule, which they did. That date said October 7. They have slipped on that schedule as well,” Coffland told the CVN this week. “The contractor really didn’t get working on it until early August. I don’t know that they have a real good excuse, but that’s just what it is.”

The Haines Dolphins swim team would typically be in the pool training for meets by now. Haines Dolphins Swim Team board member Leslie Ross said the delay might affect its roster. “That is very disappointing for our team. We’re totally supportive of all this work being done, but it will definitely impact our number of swimmers participating and our older competitive swimmers,” Ross said. “It’s going to eat into their time to practice and be competitive.”

Coffland praised the work that’s been completed. The contractor faced delays early in the project after its tools and materials didn’t arrive on schedule. Workers are currently putting the liner in the pool, Coffland said. They’ve rebuilt the drainage system, installing new floors, drains and showers in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

An issue of differing site conditions in regard to the floor required negotiation of contract amounts less than $20,000, borough manager Debra Schnabel wrote. She said the borough has discussed penalizing the contractor should the Oct. 7 date not be met.

Coffland estimates the work will be completed by Nov. 1, although the contractor hasn’t provided a date yet.
