Haines Friends of Recycling thanks Alaska Marine Lines for generously donating a storage van to benefit our growing fish net recycling program. Special thanks to AML’s Ray Thibodeau for shipment from Ketchikan, Mike Ganey at the local office for delivery to the Recycling Center, and Jack Smith at Whiterock for assistance with unloading equipment. The van is being used to accumulate clean, stripped gillnets for shipment to a new West Coast recycling facility in partnership with NetYourProblem, a business that promotes fishing gear recycling around Alaska. “Recyclate” from nylon web is a sustainable raw material made into dozens of products like clothing, household items, and sports equipment.

The good news is HFR is making it possible for busy Haines fishermen to recycle old nets.  The Recycle Center will be open two more Saturdays to receive nets for recycling, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Nets are $35 if the weed line and hangings remain, and $15 if completely stripped of lines. They can also be dropped off at our partner location, Haines Packing Net Loft, at your convenience.

As the fishing season winds down, please take advantage of this community service. Thank you again for supporting recycling in the Chilkat Valley.
