Ellette Barlog was born to Dez Renallo and Julian Barlog on July 25 at 10:45 a.m. in Juneau. Ellette weighed 7 pounds and was 20.5 inches long. She joins big sisters Fiora and Eowyn. With ferry sailings cancelled, Ellette took her first flight at just a few days old.
Cameron Smith was born on July 22 at 9:46 a.m. to Ronnie Alsup Smith and Taylor Smith at Mercy Medical and Family Birth Center Cottonwood California. He weighed 8 pounds 15 ounces and was 21 inches long. Cameron joins big brother Cleighton. Taylor and sister-in-law Athena Alsup were in the delivery room when Cameron was born while Ronnie’s mother Lori Alsup was in the waiting room with Cleighton and excited new cousins Kinsley and Waylon Alsup.
On July 24 Rob Pollock had a very lucky day when he hit a hole in one on hole #2 at the Valley of the Eagles Golf Course. Rob was so excited he called owner, Stan and Kathy Jones right away and told him the news as well as his partner in Hawaii.
The Chapell family is home from a multi-generation backpack trip on the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail from Dyea to Bennett Lake. Rich and Sara Chapell, with their children Dylan, Sally and Lucia Chapell, were joined by Sara’s mom and stepdad Sally and Kent Weymouth from Ft. Mill, South Carolina. The group spent five days on the rugged trail, which is still littered with mining artifacts among the wildflowers and rocky terrain. The climb to the summit was made in dense fog, where at times the hikers could barely make out marker stakes 10 yards ahead. Dylan celebrated his 17th birthday on the group’s summit day, complete with a homemade birthday crown his grandmother had tucked in her pack, and a cheesecake whipped up by Sara and Sally decorated with rehydrated raspberries. Hiking the Chilkoot Trail had been a longtime goal of Kent’s and the family relished the group accomplishment, as well as the opportunity to be together along the historic route.
Nancy and Dwight Nash’s daughter Lenore Nash and her husband Brian Pindel from Wisconsin visited Haines earlier this month. Brian’s relatives were visiting as well. Lenore works in New Zealand for the U.S. Foreign Service and is also a historical romance writer. While here their nephew, Noah Nash, celebrated his ninth birthday. They really enjoyed spending time with the family, Nash said.
Lisa Daugherty from Juneau Compost was in Haines to visit Genny Rietze of Haines Compost and watch Haines Friends of Recycling go to work at last weekend’s fair. The Southeast Alaska State Fair has made efforts to go zero waste by requiring vendors to use compostable utensils and trays for the event. Haines Friends of Recycling volunteers staffed compost and recycle stations to make sure things are where they need to go and were able to compost almost 1,700 pounds of food scraps and material. A treat for many was to watch Genny walk down the runway in her zero-waste dress which was made from thousands of fruit stickers that she collected from local businesses, locals and people from other parts of the world.
This year 193 children, up to age 12, read or listened to 8,063 books or chapters for the summer reading program “Universe of Stories.” Children’s librarian Holly Davis said 75 kids and 30 adults came to celebrate the finale at the library on Wednesday, July 24. Holly is already looking forward to after-school library programs starting Aug. 21 when kids are in school again. The first after-school series will be “Snack Attack is Back!” where kids learn to make simple snacks with healthy ingredients on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after school. “August snacks will include raspberry smoothies, homemade salsa and guacamole, and amazing Thai peanut dipping sauce (peanut-free) for veggies from all colors of the rainbow,” said Holly.
The puppeteering group Geppeto’s Junkyard had a successful weekend at the fair. The newly built “Gypsy Wagon” made its debut. “We had good audience turn out at every show. Our last show at 8 p.m. on Saturday was standing room only, despite the pouring rain,” said member Hannah Bochart.
Two names were misspelled in last week’s Duly Noted. The correct spellings are Lynzee Swinton and Trey Wortman.
