Sculpture garden will host farmers market

The Fort Seward sculpture garden’s revitalization will be on full display at next week’s first Friday celebration.

Over the past few weeks, the Alaska Arts Confluence has been working to clean up the garden site and prepare it for events. Now, the garden is scheduled to host the very first evening farmers market, featuring food, art, and produce.

“The farmers market itself is very excited to try out this opportunity,” said market organizer Vija Pelekis. Twelve vendors are scheduled to be at the market, but Pelekis said she expects more to join.

The event promises to be unique. Fort Seward Drive South will be closed for the evening to give more space for the market, and local band Dynaflow will perform.

Chef Travis Kukull will be the event’s “market chef,” demonstrating how to cook one-pan vegetable paella. “(I’ll) go through step by step and feed everybody,” Kukull said. He expects the paella will feed about 50 people.

The market will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 2. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor is invited to contact Pelekis at (206) 313-1829 or

Studio Incamminati workshop returns to Haines

Those wishing to work on their artistic skills will have the opportunity in August.

Studio Incamminati, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit art school, will host a workshop in Haines from Aug. 5-9.

“Portrait Painting: Form and Color” is the fifth such workshop the nonprofit has held in Haines. The annual event is organized through the studio’s “In Your Town” initiative, which puts on programs throughout the U.S. The workshop in Haines is the studio’s only event in Alaska.

“They are an amazing school, I have to say,” said local organizer Donna Catotti. “This is an incredible opportunity to hone your skills.”

Registration is required for the five-day oil painting and portrait class, which will take place at the Haines ANB Hall. The studio will also host a public portrait demonstration on July 6 from 5 to 9 p.m.

The school is “excellent,” said local artist Yuko Hays, who is a student at Studio Incamminati and attended the 2015 “In Your Town” program. She said she was glad to have attended the workshop “at the beginning of her art journey.”

Hays will exhibit work from her second year at Studio Incamminati on First Friday, Aug. 2, at the Alaska Arts Confluence.

Participants can register for the workshop online at http://www.studioincamminati.org/ or by calling 215-592-7910.

Sheldon Museum six-week spotlight will shine on American landscapes

Visitors to the Haines Sheldon Museum will soon be able to take a journey from Alaska to Arizona.

The latest in the museum’s six-week spotlight series is “Complementary Colors – Alaska to Arizona,” an exhibition of Donna Catotti and Rob Goldberg’s artwork. Paintings by both artists will be displayed, along with guitars built by Goldberg.

The spotlight series, started by the museum in 2007, highlights local artists and helps advance their artistic careers.

The works in “Complementary Colors” are inspired by the color palettes of landscapes in Alaska and Arizona, “the cool blues and purples of Alaska and the reds and browns of the desert southwest,” Catotti wrote in a statement that will accompany the works.

“I’m excited to see how it comes to life,” said Regi Johanos, the museum’s community coordinator.

“Complementary Colors” will run through Sept. 14.

Catotti will also host painting demonstrations at the museum every Wednesday for four weeks, starting Aug. 21.

“Artists set a high standard for themselves, and I’m pleased with what I have accomplished,” Catotti said. “I wouldn’t hang it if I wasn’t happy with it.”

The museum will celebrate the exhibit with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. First Friday. Tom Heywood is scheduled to perform live music with one of Goldberg’s guitars.
