Fireworks will fly again this year at Picture Point, the first official display in Haines since 2015.

Organized fireworks shows in Haines were absent for the past three years, after pyrotechnician Phil Wilde’s certification expired in 2016.

This year, fireworks are back on the agenda, in the form of a smaller show. Under state law, displays of fireworks weighing more than a total of 250 pounds require a licensed pyrotechnician. Because of that, the weight of the fireworks for the Picture Point show will be below that limit. Wilde, who is again putting on this year’s display, calls it a “backyard” show.

“I’m always excited about doing fireworks shows with friends and family,” Wilde said.

The show will start at 11 p.m. and will last between 20 and 35 minutes. The display will be composed of “multidirectional, multilayered” fireworks that will go to heights around 200 feet, said Wilde.

The show is organized by the Haines Chamber of Commerce, with funding donated by individuals and local businesses.

The show will be supervised by officers from the volunteer fire department, but Wilde says that there’s nothing to worry about.

“I’ve been doing shows since I was 18,” said Wilde. “They’re great. They’re fun to have. Nobody ever gets hurt.”

Wilde will put on another, unofficial show 24 hours earlier at 33 Mile.
