When I moved from Haines nine years ago, we had a horrible drug problem here that had affected many of our preteens and teenagers. You know, adults can make the choices they want, using drugs is one of them, not a good choice in my opinion, but nevertheless their choice. Our young people on the other hand is another issue. Kids often don’t have the skills needed to stand up to adult peer pressure, bullying and threats, in order to say No to first time smoking, drinking, or drug use.
I moved back to Haines because at this point in time I believe we have a great group of people trying to stem the tide of illicit and illegal drug selling in our small town. They have families with children and don’t want to see their children go through the torture drug use brings to those who are enslaved to them.
I have lost family members to the “party scene.” One murdered for returning a coat left at a party and another to a life of jail and broken relationships with family and loved ones. To be honest, if someone doesn’t want a dog in this town that can cut down on drugs and crime, I have to ask them, “Why?” Life is hard enough for today’s family, let’s take illegal drugs out of the equation.
